I really wanted to go mountain biking in faraway Africa. To be sporty, you know. Little did I know that when I returned, I would realize that being sporty wasn't actually that important to me! What a wonderful, emotional, educational, warm, and enjoyable experience it was to get to know Africa! What a wonderful organization to be able to contribute to in this way!

Vélo Afrique

I have climbed and descended mountains, cycled with a purpose, and finally for a good cause. And what a cause... Vélo Afrique builds schools where children are given opportunities to develop their talents. And what a warm country Cameroon is: literally, with temperatures of 30°C, and certainly figuratively, with the warm words “bon courage” and “allez les blancs” still ringing in my ears. And the sincere “bonsoir,” even though it was only just past noon!

With a wonderful group of people, we took on the sporting challenge and raised the necessary funds to pay off the school building in Ibuje and furnish it. The gratitude of the entire school community was overwhelming.

The many positive vibes, the “everything will be fine because there is a solution for everything” mentality, and warm hospitality will continue to inspire us!

Sometimes dreams come true 😀
Thank you, Velo Afrique!

After participating in the Senegal edition, I was quickly convinced to also participate in the Cameroon edition in March 2015. Two editions of Vélo Afrique, two bull's-eyes. Cycling through Africa... Wonderful! The smiling faces of the children in the schools stay with you. Their gratitude is so great. You feel a strong connection with the school projects that have been realized. Thank you!

  • Accommodation and sleeping arrangements
Accommodation is always a mix of tent camps, inns, hotels, and even resorts. Each location has sanitary facilities so that we can wash ourselves. There is also electricity at each location to charge your GPS.
  • Theft and safety
The basic rule is that you should not bring any valuable items with you. It is better to leave jewelry, money, or expensive phones at home. You are responsible for your own equipment and bicycle. We advise everyone to always lock their travel bag and lock their bicycle. Velo Afrique cannot provide insurance for this.
  • Are the destinations safe?
As an organization, we have good contacts with our local representatives and the Ministry of Tourism. In Belgium, we follow the advice of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the health recommendations of the Tropical Institute. Of course, we do not want to take any risks as an organization. If it turns out that the political and/or medical situation at the destination is unstable or too dangerous, we will inform you and look into possible alternatives.
  • Is there a minimum age for participation?
To participate, you must be at least 18 years old at the time of departure.
  • Do I need a passport or visa?
You need a valid international passport and a visa. (If you are traveling outside of Europe) Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your return to Belgium. We will explain how to apply for a visa if applicable.
  • I want to cancel (out of necessity)?
Of course, we hope that you will be able to join us, but if circumstances force you to cancel, the following cancellation conditions apply: up to 70 days before departure: 70% of the travel sum is refundable, minus the registration fee between 70 and 55 days before departure: 50% of the travel sum is refundable, minus the registration fee between 55 and 30 days before departure: 25% refundable of the travel sum minus the registration fee less than 21 days before departure: 0% of the travel sum minus the registration fee In the event of cancellation by a participant, the participant may transfer their place to a third party. Any costs associated with this will be borne by the participant.
  • On-site bike maintenance
A bike mechanic will accompany us and can carry out any urgent basic repairs immediately. We expect each participant to provide basic equipment: at least four spare tires and repair kits. Every day, you can visit the bike doctor at the base camp for a lubrication service. If your bike proves to be “beyond repair,” we have spare bikes available. More details can be found in the roadbook. Agreements regarding replacement parts will be shared in the closed group.
  • Inner tubes and outer tires
For inner tubes, we recommend “Joe's No Flat.” This is a ready-to-use inner tube with a “milk product” inside that seals punctures. Tubeless is also possible, but keep in mind that your tires will need to be deflated for transport, there is no compressor available, and CO² cartridges are not allowed on the plane. For outer tires, we recommend the “X-King 2.2 Protection” or “Race King 2.2” from Continental. A similar tire from another brand is also fine.
  • Can I participate using an E-MTB?
Depends on what adventure you are joining. We cannot fly your bike because the battery is not allowed on an airplane. Not all destinations have E-bikes available for rental. We recommend you get in touch with us via email to discuss your options.
  • How are the bikes transported?
Vélo Adventures provides one bike box per participant for transporting the bikes. Depending on the country you are visiting, We send them beforehand by plane or by car. In the provided video, you can find out how to pack your bike optimally in the bike box. We organize a day for packing. More details about this will be provided in the closed group concerning your adventure.
  • What's in your bike bag?
When cycling, you want to carry as little as possible, but still have the essentials. In case of a breakdown along the way, you will definitely need the following items in your bike bag or on your bike: bike pump spare inner tube toolkit with chain tool patch kit missing link
  • Illness and minor accidents?
A doctor follows the peloton in a support vehicle and can provide urgent care in the event of illness or minor crashes. Every evening at base camp, the doctor organizes a “doctor's hour” where you can have your (really painful) aches and pains treated.
  • What medication do I need to bring myself?
If you take specific medication or have any medical concerns, you can indicate this on your personal medical form, which will be collected before departure. You must bring any specific medication yourself. The doctor has an extensive pharmacy, but you must provide basic items yourself. More information can be found in the roadbook.
  • Communication with home?
SIM card: The organization offers a local SIM card with data at a reasonable price. This allows you to make calls and communicate via WhatsApp or other online communication tools. You will no longer be able to make or receive calls on your normal number. Make sure you clearly communicate with your family in advance that all communication will be via email or WhatsApp. e-SIM: There are various providers of e-SIMs. Keep in mind that these are much more expensive and do not always work everywhere (without visiting a retailer, which we don't have time for). Make sure you still have something to talk about when you get home.
